Megan Harkin - Artist
I have situated my practice around my interest in psychodynamics and analysis. Within this realm I have been able to explore and experiment with materials, challenging how I use materials and creative processes to express myself.
My practice as an artist allows my work to be experimental. Over time I have found I was able to make an established contribution to my own understanding of what it meant to break boundaries within art.
The themes within my initial works vary, however material and process have always been important to my practice.
I explore the potential of material through testing its boundaries and the expectations we have over 'purpose' of material.
Textiles is a common material I use throughout my practice. It is something I have always turned to throughout my work.
My last work is critical of the disparity between traditional and contemporary patchwork quilting. In the series I challenge the idea of seeing patchwork as art or as something of domestic purpose.
In my study I have explored our relationship with material and tested the boundaries of what patchwork quilting can be and has become.
My work now is a critique of self. I am currently exploring the idea of my own process. Through recognising that I have always had control over my materials, I have begun a reflective diary that experiments with material and my own process and methods of creative application.
